Welcome back to an original

Today we welcomed back one of the original Ellon skaters. Mark, Spiff, Adam despite being over 60 can still shred it on the board. His traill doggy just about managed to keep up.. NB we don't recommend animals and pets come on to the pump track.

The Heart of Ellon

The new heart of Ellon Instagram frame was on show at the wheel park on Wednesday. Look out for the heart at events and locations in Ellon throughout the year.

Maintenace and upkeep

An early start on Saturday morning for our maintenance volunteers, picking stones, filling drainage gravel, shifting 10 tonnes of topsoil and seed planting areas on the hillock.  Thanks to Jamiesons Quarry for supplying the topsoil and gravel at cost.

Wheel Park private hire sessions

The park needs funds to keep going. There are costs for maintenance, insurance and money other things to ensure that most of the time the wheel park is there for everyone to enjoy.

To raise funds we hire out some parts of the park for private sessions such as cycle coaching, disability cycling sessions, roller skiing etc.

When sessions are on we will have signs up. Please respect the signage and keep clear. This is for everyone safety.

This way we can keep the park free for everyone to use.

On Saturday 9th Nov 2024 the Ythan CC youth squad, Ythan QL, completed a sponsored cycle at the wheel park. They cycled round and round the circuit for an hour to see how many laps they could do. In total they cycled an amazing 1088 laps of the circuit. T-rex managed one lap :-).

The money raised was to help raise funds for phase 2 of the wheel park development. Well done everyone

Under the lights

Although the wheelpark doesn't have any full time lights, Ythan Cycle Club have procured a set of temporary lights, with the help of Hope Technologies (Hope Tech - Made in Barnoldswick, England0  for nighttime training sessions. These were in use on 30 October at a cycle cross training session

Fireworks and spooks

On Saturday evening the Ellon Round Table put on a magnificent firework display using the wheel park as their base.  On Sunday morning as the funfair was being dismantled, Gordon Park junior parkrun used the circuit as part of their circuit for the running youths. There were skeletons, zombies and monsters running wild in Gordon Park - great fun.

Kick off time is 7pm

Fire Station Donation

We were delighted to receive a donation from Ellon Fire Station raised during their recent station open day.

New benches arrive at site

Two new picnic benches have arrived at site. These were kindly donated by Ellon@heart. We are particularly happy that one of the benches has an extended area designed so that a wheelchair user can easily use the bench.

Ellon Adaptive Bikes gets a new home

On Wednesday mornings the Ellon adaptive bikes project run by Ythan Cycle Club in conjunction with Grampian adaptive bike bothies will run disability bike sessions at the wheel park circuit. Come on down and try out many of the adaptive bikes in the Ythan fleet.

Aberdeen Cycle Forum

It is gratifying that cycling groups can see the benefit of such a facility for building a love of cycling that lasts a lifetime. Aberdeen Cycle Forum usually award their best new infrastructure project to a new cycle lane or cycle storage structure. We were so pleased that they awarded Ellon Wheel Park the award for best cycling infrastructure project for 2024.

Ellon Sole Mates

Ellon Sole Mates ( Jog Scotland) presented the Wheel Park with a cheque for £800 to help develop phase 2 of the project.  Thank you so much to everyone who took part in their fun run and raised the money to help us make the project even better.

Occasionally we get a message from the gods about our project. This stunning photo, taken by Scott Cruickshank hopefully means they approve of what we are building

Plans and updates

“ The summer sun is fading as the year grows old, and darker days are drawing near, the winter winds will be much colder”, but work goes on……….

The short term plans for the park are for landscaping work to continue, biodiversity planting ongoing, and some new park picnic tables to be introduced. One of the picnic tables has been designed with an extended leaf for easy wheelchair access. We are also looking to introduce a bike maintenance stand and a bike rack.  We are also still trying to get the council to put in permanent rubbish bins. The introduction of the temporary one by Ellon@Heart has helped with a reduction of litter.

The circuit will also shortly become the hub for the disability cycling sessions run by Ythan Cycle Club and Grampian Disability sport.

Long term we are now in discussion with finalising the design and costings for phase 2, the skate park zone. We have started the process of raising money for that.  We are delighted by how much use the park is getting and how everyone no matter what age or ability is getting something from the park.

What would you like to see being introduced to the park in the future? Let us know by contacting us through our contact page.

Lets go for phase 2

fundraising.JPG

We hope you have enjoyed using the wheel park over the summer since the successful opening at the beginning of June. We have been delighted by the huge number of people using the facility and the range of ages and abilities of those having fun and honing their wheel sport skills.

Ellon Wheel Park Group is a volunteer led charity (SC052816) which exists to run and develop the facility. Our immediate plans include installation of picnic benches and other equipment. Our longer-term plans include the phase 2 development of the skate/ BMX area.  We also have operational costs to keep the park running and maintained.

To help us with this we have just launched a new justgiving page

If you have enjoyed using the facility and want to help us keep it running and developing, please donate here https://donate.justgiving.com/charity/ellonwheelpark . If you are a UK taxpayer, please Gift Aid your donation. We get more money at no extra cost to you and if you are a higher rate tax payer you can claim tax relief on your donation.

Your donations will help us provide even more fun for everyone, no matter what age or ability.  Every donation gets us closer to the goal of completing this unique facility for locals and visitors to enjoy.

One of the potential sources of funding for the skatepark requires match funding of 10%, so a £25 donation from you would allow us to claim £250 of funding from them.

If you would like to help out by volunteering, joining the wheel park committee or can help us with fundraising please let us know by contacting info.ewpg@gmail.com

If you are business and would like to sponsor a corner, berm or roller, please get in touch. As a charity we can help you offset those taxes.

Thank you to the people of Ellon for your continued support.

Phase 1 Open Day

Ellon Round Table had their yearly Ellon Gala Day on June 4th. We were delighted to hold the pump track and cycle circuit opening the same day

The Ellon Wheel Park Story

Since the late 1970s Ellon has had a few attempts at building cycling and skating facilities.  When the skateboard revolution started around 1980 Ellon skaters would head off to Fraserburgh or Aberdeen to ride the new skate facilities there. In the 1990s a group called Ellon Chiels on Wheels raised funds in Ellon for wooden skate ramps and a quarter pipe. These were stored at Ellon Academy and at Willie’s Shelter in Gordon Park. Unfortunately, these were destroyed along with the shelter in a fire and the project was abandoned.

In the 2010s when the new Ellon Community Campus was being built a cycle circuit was included in the designs. Due to safety concerns with car parking, the circuit couldn’t be used and was abandoned. Youth cyclists used the old academy car park for cycle practice before this became a building site and unsafe for cycling.

In 2016/2017 there was an attempt to set up a wheel park group looking at various sites in and around Ellon but there was a lack of drive and little sign of investment.

In 2020 Scottish Cycling announced that the Cycling World Championships were being held in Scotland in 2023 and as part of that there would be an eight-million-pound investment in facilities in Scotland. This would be administered by Sportscotland and Scottish Cycling.

A group of volunteers set up Ellon Wheel Park Group as a not-for-profit organisation and declared an expression of interest in a share of the Cycling Facilities Fund.  The aim was to build a fantastic fully inclusive accessible facility that could be used by anyone with an interest in manual powered wheeled sport no matter what their ability. A safe place for people to play, be creative and have fun. The park was to be suitable for use by young or old beginners and experts. There then began a busy period where money was raised for a feasibility study carried out by experienced sports facility project managers (Alan Jones Associates).

A consultation survey was launched, the Ellon Wheel Park Group was formally set up, governance documents were drawn up and bank accounts opened and, publicity was sought in the local press and on social media (We were in the midst of the Covid global pandemic). Discussions were held with the council, local trusts, other sports clubs, police, councillors, youth groups, building developers and local farmers.  Local residents even put round flyers to ensure that people living near Gordon Park were aware of the proposed development at the lower section of Gordon Park.

Options for the site of a wheel park facility were narrowed down to three. These were Deer Park, land beside the community campus and the lower section of Gordon Park.  In the end, Deer Park was ruled out because the Ellon Castle Gardens Trust had other plans for the park and the community campus land was ruled out because the developers were not ready to start work there and it was still being used for farming. Neither alternative site was available.

Discussions began with Aberdeenshire Council regarding a community asset transfer of the lower section of Gordon Park to the Group and a 25-year lease was formally agreed at an open council meeting in early 2022. Later in 2022, at another open council meeting, planning permission for a wheel park consisting of a skatepark zone, a pump track zone and a cycle circuit zone with beginners areas was approved.

Alongside this work the Wheel Park Group went out to tender for a company to design and build the park through Public Contracts Scotland. Ten noted interested were registered and in the end Velosolutions UK and Ireland were chosen as the successful company.

It was clear from the feasibility study and tender submissions that the group would need a lot more money than the £400,000 from the Cycling Facilities Fund so fundraising continued at a macro level to get the money for construction and at a micro level to allow the project to continue operationally. Major funding was received from Aberdeenshire Place Based Investment, EB Scotland (landfill), Rural Community Led Vision Fund and developers obligations. This has led to an incredible amount of over £755,000 pounds being raised for investment in Ellon and this is enough to start construction of phase 1 of the wheel park which consists of the construction of the cycle circuit and the pumptrack advanced and beginner’s areas.

Initailly it was hoped that construction can start later in summer 2023.

Meanwhile funding and money raising continues for phase 2 (skatepark zone) and the Wheel Park Group has applied to become a SCIO.

Into 2024 and we finally got to a position where we could start construction on phase 1 (pump track and circuit).

Velosolutions with Paul and team on site are doing a great job.

Art the beginning of June 2024 phase 1 of the wheel park was officially opened at the Ellon Gala day.  Over the first month of opening the response has been tremendous with the pump track drawing in hundreds of folk using it. Every day and evening its packed with people enjoying themselves.

Meanwhile work goes on. The ground is proving to be difficultly to reseed due to very dry weather and stoney ground. Some of the turf has slipped and died. This will all be rectified over the next few months as grass and wildflowers begin to grow.
